Israeli Strike Targets pro-Iranian Militias Near Syria-Iraq Border, Watchdog Reports
According to the report, six militia members were killed, including four Syrian nationals, in the attack east of the city of Deir el-Zour.
It was the second attack in Syria that was attributed to Israel by foreign reports within a week. Last week, Syrian state television reported that air defenses had intercepted an attempted Israeli strike. According to that report, sites in the southeastern city of As-Suwayda and Deir el-Zour in the east were attacked.
Syrian television said two soldiers were killed and four wounded in the As-Suwayda attack, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said five members of an Iranian militia were killed in the Deir el-Zour strike.
About three weeks ago, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that drones had attacked a base used by a pro-Iranian militia in the Deir el-Zour area. According to the group, 12 militia members, Shi'ite fighters from Iraq and Afghanistan, were killed when eight missiles were fired. Arms depots and vehicles were reportedly damaged.
