ERBIL - Protecting the environment is not only the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) duty, it is also the citizens' responsibility to preserve it, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Friday.

"Kurdistan is home to some of the most beautiful natural environments and habitats in the world. This government is working hard to preserve and sustain them, but as Kurdistanis, we each have our own responsibility," Barzani wrote on Twitter on the World Environment Day.

"Protecting the environment is not only the duty of companies, it falls on every Kurdistani citizen as well," the Kurdish premier said in a video message published on his Twitter account.

He noted that "every person" in the Kurdistan Region "must" treat the autonomous region as their home, reiterating his cabinet's commitment to spare no efforts to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard.

"This government will take it upon itself to push companies in that direction, and do its best to work with the people, and fulfill all of these responsibilities," Barzani added.

"We are working hard in this matter and to ensure that trash and waste are processed in a way that is least harmful to the people of Kurdistan."
