Nearly $58K stolen in burglary incident in Erbil’s Khabat district
The incident comes during an imposed COVID-19 night curfew in the Kurdistan Region. It marks the second burglary act following the theft of $2.5 million worth of gold from a store in Soran district, Erbil’s northeast.
The burglary took place at two neighboring convenience and electrics stores in the district, a source in the area told Kurdistan 24. The safes of the stores were broken “skillfully” the source said, citing the ability of the thieves to break the thick gates of the top floor of the market and safes.
“Nearly $41,000 dollars is stolen, including the phone credit cards,” Yousif Assad, the owner of the convenience store, said of the losses.
“I received a phone call at 10 p.m. last night [Tuesday], informing me that there is noise in the back of the store,” Assad said. After the call, he phoned the night security guard to notify him about the incident, the store owner told Kurdistan 24. The officer told me “not to worry,” he added.
“They [burglars] penetrated through the attic doors,” Assad said. “They spent a good time on breaking those doors,” citing how well-made the attic doors.
The investigations have begun since the security forces were alerted of the burglary, the store owner told Kurdistan 24. The investigative team took the “CCTV cameras in the store to study them,” he added.
Nothing else except the money and phone credit cards were stolen at the store, Assad noted.
In the same manner, the safe of the electric store was broken by the burglars, the source told Kurdistan 24. “They brought the safe to the W.C. to break it,” a man in a short video sent to Kurdistan 24 explained.
