PM Barzani Remembers Victims of Baath Regime’s 1987 Chemical Attack
ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday honored the victims of 1987 chemical attack by the Baath regime.

“On 16 April 1987, the Baath regime gas attacks on Balisan Valley, Sheikh Wasanan and other villages started a long, murderous campaign against Kurdistan,” PM Barzani wrote on his official Twitter feed.

“Hundreds died. Thousands suffered appalling injuries. Many survivors have never fully recovered. We honour them all,” the Kurdish leader added.

On this day 33 years ago, the Baath regime, under the leadership of notorious dictator Saddam Hussein began a chain of crimes to oppress the Kurds who had only asked for their basic rights.

A year later, then Iraqi government carried out one of the most heinous crimes of the century by gassing the Kurdish town of Halabja, killing over 5,000 people instantly and living more than 10,000 with injuries.
