Kurds will Never Accept Oppression, Barzani Says to Mark 1991 Uprising
ERBIL — On the 29th anniversary of the 1991 Uprising, Kurdish prominent leader Masoud Barzani said the people of Kurdistan will never accept oppression and injustice.

“I salute and congratulate the people of Kurdistan on the 29th anniversary of the uprising against the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein,” Barzani wrote on Twitter.

“The unyielding message of the uprising was and remains: our people will never accept oppression and injustice.”

The 1991 uprising, or better known as the major uprising, was led by the people of Kurdistan Region against Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime. The Peshmerga forces also played a key role in the uprising after they left the mountains and joined the people in the cities.

It is considered as a landmark event which altered regional politics, which ultimately led to the UN Security Council’s Resolution 688 which created a no-fly zone to protect the Kurds in northern Iraq against the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein.
