London (dpa) - British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on Tuesday backed opposition leader Juan Guaido's efforts to bring a "peaceful and democratic resolution" to Venezuela's political crisis.

Britain is among about 50 nations that have recognized Guaido as Venezuela's interim president since January 2019, when he declared himself the legitimate head of government and began trying to oust President Nicolas Maduro.

"The people of Venezuela have suffered long enough. They deserve a better future," Raab said following talks with Guaido, who was also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London.

"We condemn what the Maduro regime is doing to threaten democracy and we support Juan Guaido's efforts towards a peaceful and democratic resolution," Raab added.

"In our meeting today, I pledged our unwavering support to work with our international partners to bring an end to the appalling crisis," he said.

Guaido's foreign affairs representative Julio Borges said opposition lawmakers were attacked by pro-government paramilitaries during a failed attempt to enter parliament last week, in an ongoing stand-off with security forces for control of the building.

Maduro told the Washington Post last week that he wants direct talks on "a new type of relationship" with the United States, which he has accused of trying to overthrow him.

There is no sign that the US or its core allies, including EU nations, are willing to change their stance that Maduro must vacate the presidency.

US sanctions are isolating the country's economy, which was already battered by years of mismanagement and corruption.
