Turkey to boost military support to Libya if needed, Erdogan says
The military deal allows Turkey to deploy military training personnel and equipment to Libya upon request.
"We will increase the military aspect of our support (to Libya) and evaluate all possibilities from the ground, sea and air," Erdogan told an event promoting locally-developed submarines in the north-western city of Kocaeli.
Since April, Libya has been the site of a bitter conflict between the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli and the forces of military strongman Khalifa Haftar, who are based in Libya's east.
The Turkish government inked a security and military cooperation deal on maritime boundaries with Libya's UN-backed government last month, drawing criticism from Greece and other countries.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias arrived Sunday in Benghazi, the seat of Haftar-allied administration, for talks about maritime pact.
Ankara's deal with the Tripoli stoked tensions with Greece, Cyprus and Egypt over disputed drilling for oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
Turkey will "absolutely not backtrack" on the deals signed with Libya, Erdogan said, adding the pacts comply with the international law.
"Nobody should come to us with intentions to exclude us, confine us to our own shores, seize our economic interests," Erdogan said, adding Turkey has "no intention of provoking conflicts" in the region.
Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are seen as aligned with Russia in backing Haftar, whereas Qatar is believed to support the Tripoli government, alongside Turkey.
Forces loyal to Haftar said late Saturday that they had seized a vessel with Turkish crew on board. The Grenada-flagged ship was intercepted with its three Turkish crew members off Libya's eastern city of Derna, a spokesman for Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) said.
The vessel had been taken to the LNA-controlled port of Ras al-Hilal for inspection, LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mesamri added on his Facebook page, without giving details.
