ERBIL — Residents of a Kurdish village near the disputed town of Makhmour picked up their arms and repelled an attack by the Islamic State (IS), said the Ministry of Peshmerga.

A group of IS jihadists attempted to sneak into the village of Ali Rash near Baqirta subdistrict of Mahmour at around 19:00 (Erbil Time) on Thursday, said the ministry in a statement. “But the residents of the village, who are all Kurds, blocked their way after engaging them”.

The jihadists were forced to escape the region, but it was not clear if there was any casualties on either sides.
