Sadr's Sairoon Gives Public Right to Decide on PM's Successor
ERBIL - Although the Sairoon alliance, led by Iraqi powerful Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, has the official right to nominate a new PM for the country after Adil Abdul Mahdi's resignation from the premiership, the largest parliamentary bloc has left the choice to the public.

Speaking to reporters, the members of Sairoon urged President Barham Salih to choose a new premier based on people's demands.

They pointed out that "there is no largest parliamentary blocs, only the Iraqi people are the largest bloc," they, therefore, would leave the choice to the public.

The call came after Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi noted that the country's president is now expected to call on the largest parliamentary faction to nominate a successor.

After weeks of violent protests against the government in the capital Baghdad and several other major cities, PM Abdul Mahdi handed in his resignation to the parliament on Saturday and it was approved by the legislature on Sunday.
