The US Embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate General in Erbil have issued a security alert warning Americans across the Middle East of a complex and potentially worsening security environment.

The alert urged US citizens currently in the region to exercise increased caution, citing the possibility of unforeseen escalation that could lead to flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

Americans traveling to or from the Middle East were advised to closely monitor airport and airline operations and to contact their airlines directly if their flights are affected.

The diplomatic missions also warned that US diplomatic facilities, including locations outside the Middle East, have been targeted. According to the alert, Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target US interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and American citizens, including US businesses and other institutions.

US citizens were encouraged to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and make it easier for US diplomatic missions to contact them during emergencies.

The alert also advised Americans to keep their mobile phones charged, remain alert to their surroundings, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and stay away from areas with a heavy police presence.

In the event of an aerial attack, Americans were instructed to stay away from windows and glass doors and to avoid fallen debris. They were also advised to monitor their phones and official news sources for further instructions.

The US missions urged Americans to follow directions issued by local authorities, monitor local media and exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the United States.

The alert concluded by advising Americans to maintain a low profile and remain vigilant as the security situation in the region continues to develop.
