Trump Warns Iran Will “Pay the Price” as Tensions Escalate Despite Ongoing Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that Iran would face consequences for delays in negotiations aimed at securing a permanent settlement following months of military confrontation between the two countries.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran had missed an opportunity to reach a favorable agreement.
“They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price,” Trump wrote.
The remarks come as Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic efforts to transform the fragile April 8 ceasefire into a lasting agreement after the six-week conflict that began on February 28. The first round of post-war negotiations ended on April 11 without a final settlement.
In a separate statement, Trump claimed that the United States had imposed an unprecedented naval blockade on Iran, adding that Tehran was facing severe economic difficulties.
“Iran is doing ZERO business, not paying their military, or any of their bills, and quickly becoming a FAILED NATION! Lots of oil is getting out,” he wrote.
The United States began enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports on April 13, while Iran tightened its control over shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The reciprocal maritime measures have heightened tensions in one of the world's most critical energy transit routes.
Trump’s latest comments represent a notable shift from his more optimistic tone a day earlier. On Tuesday, he told reporters that negotiations were in their “final throes” and suggested that an agreement could be reached within “two or three days.”
Meanwhile, confrontations in and around the Strait of Hormuz have continued. U.S. forces have intercepted drones and carried out maritime interdictions against vessels accused of supporting Iran, while Tehran has maintained strict transit controls through the waterway.
Late Tuesday, the U.S. military announced retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets following the downing of an American military helicopter near the coast of Oman on Monday. According to United States Central Command, two crew members from a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter were rescued safely within approximately two hours after the aircraft went down. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Iran responded on Wednesday by claiming it had targeted American military bases in Jordan and Bahrain, marking a further escalation in hostilities despite ongoing diplomatic contacts between the two nations.
