Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Released on Bail, Transferred to Tehran Hospital

Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been temporarily released from prison on bail and transferred to a hospital in Tehran for urgent medical treatment, according to a statement issued by a foundation run by her family.

The foundation announced on Sunday that Mohammadi’s sentence had been temporarily suspended following the payment of a substantial bail amount. She was transferred by ambulance to Pars Hospital in Tehran, where she is expected to receive treatment from her own medical team.

No further details were provided regarding the bail arrangements or the duration of the suspension of her sentence.

Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in Paris, confirmed the transfer in a post on social media.

The development comes days after Mohammadi reportedly collapsed in her prison cell in the northwestern city of Zanjan, where she had been serving her sentence. She was hospitalized there around ten days ago amid growing concerns about her deteriorating health.

Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, based in Oslo, said medical examiners had previously recommended her transfer to Tehran for specialized care, but the move had allegedly been blocked by Iranian intelligence authorities.

“I’m relieved now. I can breathe lightly,” he told the Associated Press in a message.

Mohammadi, one of Iran’s most prominent human rights advocates, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her longstanding campaign for women’s rights and freedom in Iran.
