Kurdistan Region President Engages Key Iraqi Leaders in Baghdad to Advance Unity and Political Progress

During an official visit to Baghdad, Nechirvan Barzani engaged in a series of high-level meetings with Iraqi political leaders, diplomats, and representatives of diverse communities, focusing on Iraq’s political future, regional developments, and strengthening cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.

As part of his visit, the President met with Irfan Siddiq, where discussions centered on the country’s political landscape and the necessary steps to form a new federal government. Both sides highlighted the importance of coordination among Iraqi political actors to ensure a successful political process capable of meeting citizens’ expectations and safeguarding national sovereignty. The British Ambassador reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, while the President expressed appreciation for continued British assistance. Regional tensions and their broader implications were also addressed.

In a separate meeting, the President held talks with Qais al-Khazali, Secretary General of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq Movement. Their discussions focused on ongoing efforts to form a new federal government and recent regional developments. Both parties emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and sustained cooperation among political entities to protect Iraq’s interests and those of all its communities.

On the second day of his visit, the President and his delegation met with Abdul Hussein Al-Mousawi and members of the National Alnahj Alliance. The meeting underscored the necessity of unity, cooperation, and genuine partnership among political parties as a foundation for ensuring stability and addressing national challenges. Participants stressed that an effective political process depends on inclusivity and the active involvement of all stakeholders in decision-making.

The President also met with Faiq Zidan, where both sides emphasized the critical role of judicial independence in maintaining institutional integrity, stability, and the protection of constitutional rights. The President commended the judiciary’s role in fostering dialogue and stability, while both parties reiterated that adherence to the rule of law and constitutional principles remains essential for resolving national challenges. Enhancing cooperation between federal and Kurdistan Region judicial institutions was also discussed.

In another engagement, the President met with Asaad Al-Eidani to discuss developments in Basra and its relations with the provinces of the Kurdistan Region. The discussions highlighted the importance of expanding inter-provincial cooperation and exchanging successful experiences across sectors, alongside broader discussions on the national political situation.

Additionally, the President held a meeting with representatives of Yezidi, Fayli, and Sabean-Mandaean communities in the Iraqi Parliament. The discussions focused on their conditions in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the need to ensure their constitutional rights and active participation in political and administrative processes. The President reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the rights of all communities, stressing that inclusion and equality are key to strengthening stability. Community representatives, in turn, expressed appreciation for his continued support.
