On the 38th anniversary of the Anfal genocide, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani paid tribute to the victims and martyrs of Kurdistan, reaffirming the need to preserve the memory of the atrocities and calling on the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibilities toward the victims’ families.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X (Twitter), Barzani described the Anfal campaign as one of the most brutal ethnic cleansing and genocide operations carried out by the former Iraqi regime against the Kurdish people. The campaign resulted in the disappearance and martyrdom of thousands of innocent civilians and led to the destruction of thousands of Kurdish villages and rural communities across Kurdistan.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the crimes committed during the Anfal campaign must remain alive in collective memory. He stressed that future generations should understand that the rights and achievements enjoyed today in the Kurdistan Region were not easily obtained nor granted by others, but are the result of long struggle and the sacrifices of thousands of Kurdistani martyrs.
Barzani also called on the Iraqi federal government to meet its moral and constitutional obligations by providing appropriate reparations to the families of those who were killed or disappeared during the Anfal campaign.
Commemorating the anniversary, the Prime Minister paid tribute to all victims of Anfal and the martyrs of Kurdistan, honoring their sacrifice and reaffirming the enduring commitment to justice and remembrance.
