Kurdistan Region President Marks 46th Anniversary of Feyli Kurdish Genocide

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), commemorated the 46th anniversary of the genocide, deportation, and disappearance of Feyli Kurds, describing it as one of the painful chapters in Iraq’s modern history.

In a statement issued on the occasion, President Barzani said the anniversary recalls the suffering endured by thousands of Feyli Kurds who were subjected to execution, imprisonment, forced disappearance, and deportation, while being stripped of their citizenship, property, and wealth by the former Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party regime.

Barzani noted that the forced deportation of hundreds of thousands of Feyli Kurds and the disappearance of tens of thousands more constituted a racist policy that has left Iraq with a painful historical legacy. He emphasized that the Iraqi government must fulfill its responsibilities toward the victims.

The Kurdistan Region President called on the Government of Iraq to implement the ruling of the Iraqi High Criminal Court, which recognized the acts committed against Feyli Kurds as genocide, and to provide both material and moral compensation to the victims while restoring their citizenship and confiscated properties.

Barzani further stressed that the struggle, loyalty, and sacrifices of Feyli Kurds will remain a source of pride for the Kurdish people. He said the painful past should serve as a lesson for building a future based on unity, coexistence, and mutual acceptance in Iraq.

The President concluded by paying tribute to the victims, saying that peace and blessings be upon the souls of the Feyli Kurdish martyrs and all the martyrs of Kurdistan, while extending respect and greetings to their families and relatives.
