KRG Credits 8.7 Billion Dinars to Households Under Runaki Electricity Discount Program
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that more than 8.7 billion Iraqi dinars have been credited to households across the Kurdistan Region as part of the 20% electricity discount introduced last month through the digital payment platform e‑Psûle.
According to the Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of Electricity, most eligible households have already received the credit in their February electricity bills, while the remaining households will see the discount reflected in their bills next month. Authorities assured residents that every credit will be fully logged and accounted for in the system.
Official figures show that 218,095 households have already benefited from the program, with an average credit of around 40,000 Iraqi dinars per household. In addition, approximately 15,500 households had no electricity bill to pay in February due to the value of the credit applied to their accounts.
The announcement also highlighted the broader progress of the government’s electricity reform programme. According to available data from the national electricity project Runaki electricity program, nearly 4.5 million people across the Kurdistan Region — more than 70% of the population — now have access to 24-hour electricity.
Officials added that around 80% of households, particularly those with lower incomes, are currently paying less for electricity than they previously paid when combining national grid power with neighbourhood diesel generators.
The Runaki programme was first announced by Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, in October 2024. The KRG Council of Ministers later unanimously approved the programme along with a new progressive electricity tariff system in May 2025.
The KRG says it plans to extend 24-hour electricity to every home and business in the Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026, noting that major city centres already enjoy continuous electricity supply under the ongoing reform programme.
