President Masoud Barzani Marks 35th Anniversary of Kurdistan Uprising, Calls for Peace and Stability
President Masoud Barzani issued a message on Wednesday marking the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Kurdistan uprising, paying tribute to the martyrs, the Peshmerga forces, and the people of the Kurdistan Region.
In his statement, Barzani congratulated the families of those who lost their lives in the struggle and praised the role of patriots and fighters who contributed to what he described as a “valuable achievement” for the Kurdish people.
Barzani emphasized that the uprising was the result of decades of struggle and sacrifices made by the people and political forces of Kurdistan. He said the historic event continues to symbolize resilience, determination, and the Kurdish people’s aspiration to live in freedom and dignity.
“The uprising represents a message of steadfastness and refusal to surrender,” Barzani said, noting that it remains a source of pride for current and future generations.
Addressing the current regional situation, Barzani expressed hope that ongoing tensions and disputes across the Middle East would be resolved through peaceful means. He also reaffirmed efforts to keep the Kurdistan Region safe from war and instability.
Barzani concluded his message by sending greetings to the martyrs of the uprising and all those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Kurdish people and Kurdistan.
The uprising of March 1991, which followed the Gulf War, led to the collapse of Iraqi government control in much of northern Iraq and paved the way for the establishment of the Kurdistan Region’s autonomous administration.
