Iran MP Warns of Military Retaliation as Nuclear Talks Continue; Russia Backs Diplomatic Solution

An Iranian lawmaker has warned that Tehran could target U.S. aircraft carriers in the event of a military confrontation, as indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program continue.

Amir Hayat Moghaddam, a member of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Friday that Iran possesses the full capability to confront any U.S. military threat. Speaking to the Iranian website Didban Iran, Moghaddam stated that in the event of war, Iran could sink U.S. aircraft carriers or capture American soldiers.

“It is not far-fetched that we would sink U.S. aircraft carriers or take their soldiers hostage. We can inflict damage on all their forces,” he said, adding that even what he described as Donald Trump’s residence could become a target in a conflict.

Moghaddam, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), emphasized that Iran would not accept any condition requiring a suspension of uranium enrichment. He also reiterated that Tehran does not trust Washington.

Nuclear Talks and Russian Support
The remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue. Earlier this week, a second round of indirect negotiations between Iranian and U.S. delegations took place at the Omani embassy in Geneva on February 17, 2026.

In a separate development, Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to Moscow, the two officials discussed the latest developments concerning Iran’s nuclear program and negotiations with Washington.

Russia reiterated its support for a diplomatic and political solution that respects Iran’s rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Enrichment and Sanctions Relief
Araghchi recently stated that U.S. negotiators have not demanded a permanent halt to uranium enrichment and that Iran has not offered any suspension.

“We have not offered any suspension, and the U.S. side has not asked for zero enrichment,” Araghchi said in a televised interview. He explained that discussions are focused on ensuring that Iran’s nuclear program remains peaceful in exchange for sanctions relief.

“There is no military solution for Iran’s nuclear program,” Araghchi added, noting that a draft agreement could be prepared within days and submitted to U.S. counterparts.

While Iranian officials maintain that uranium enrichment will not be halted, Araghchi said both sides are working toward what he described as a “fast deal” based on a fair and equitable framework.

“A win-win deal is when the U.S. is absolutely confident that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and would remain peaceful, and for Iran sanctions are lifted,” he said.

Despite ongoing diplomacy, Moghaddam’s remarks highlight the continued tension surrounding the issue, as Tehran insists it remains fully prepared to respond to any military escalation.
