UN Warns of Severe Humanitarian Crisis as Fighting Displaces 190,000 in Aleppo

The United Nations has warned of a deepening humanitarian crisis in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo, saying nearly 190,000 civilians have been displaced following a renewed surge in fighting that has put civilian lives at serious risk.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric expressed grave concern over the rapidly deteriorating security situation, describing humanitarian conditions in the city as “extremely difficult” due to ongoing clashes and widespread insecurity.

Speaking at a press briefing at UN headquarters, Dujarric said the United Nations is closely monitoring developments on the ground and remains in contact with all relevant parties to the conflict. He added that reports point to a high number of civilian casualties and injuries, highlighting the urgent need to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

According to UN estimates, approximately 190,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes amid the escalation in hostilities. Many displaced families are seeking safety in surrounding areas under increasingly precarious conditions.

Dujarric said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), together with partner organizations, is providing assistance to those affected, including emergency shelter and basic humanitarian aid. However, he warned that access constraints and ongoing violence continue to hamper relief efforts.

The United Nations called on all parties involved in the fighting to take immediate steps to ensure the protection of civilians and to allow the rapid establishment of safe corridors for those wishing to leave affected areas.

“The protection of civilians must be prioritized,” Dujarric said, stressing the need for urgent measures to guarantee safe passage for people attempting to escape the violence.

The latest wave of displacement began on January 8, following attacks by the Syrian Arab Army on the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo. These areas have repeatedly witnessed clashes as frontlines continue to shift across northern Syria.
