President Barzani Meets Iraq’s Top Judge to Discuss Political Process

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), met on Saturday with Faiq Zaidan, head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, to discuss the country’s political situation and ongoing developments in the political process.

According to a statement from Barzani’s office, the meeting was held in Pirman and focused on the broader political landscape in Iraq, constitutional entitlements of political forces, and steps related to advancing the political process. No further details were disclosed regarding the outcomes of the talks.

Faiq Zaidan heads Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, the country’s highest judicial authority, which oversees the federal judiciary and plays a central role in interpreting the constitution and resolving disputes between state institutions. The council has been closely involved in major political milestones, including rulings on elections, parliamentary procedures, and government formation.

The meeting comes amid recent political developments in Baghdad, notably the election of new leadership for the Iraqi parliament following weeks of negotiations among rival blocs. The parliamentary vote is widely viewed as a key step toward breaking a prolonged political deadlock.

Meanwhile, Iraqi political forces are engaged in intensive negotiations to elect a new president and agree on the nomination of a prime minister—constitutional requirements for forming the next federal government. These talks involve competing Shia, Sunni, and Kurdish parties, with ongoing disagreements over power-sharing, constitutional interpretations, and federal–regional relations continuing to complicate the process.
