KDP Political Bureau to Meet in Pirmam to Discuss Post-Election Strategy

The political bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is set to hold a high-level meeting on Saturday in Pirmam under the chairmanship of party leader Masoud Barzani, with deputy leaders also in attendance, to deliberate key political files following Iraq’s recent parliamentary elections.

The session marks the first formal meeting of the KDP political bureau since the elections for the sixth term of the Iraqi parliament. Discussions are expected to center on several sensitive issues, most notably the Iraqi presidency, the party’s potential nominee for the post, and the formation of both a new federal government in Baghdad and a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

According to a senior KDP source, the agenda includes a comprehensive review of recent political developments, including the election of Iraq’s parliamentary leadership. Earlier this week, parliament elected Haybat al-Halbousi as speaker, with Adnan Fayhan and Farhad Atrushi chosen as first and second deputy speakers, respectively.

The meeting will also assess relations between Erbil and Baghdad, Iraq’s broader political landscape, and regional developments that could affect the country’s stability.

A key decision expected from the talks is whether the KDP will nominate its own candidate for the Iraqi presidency or seek a broader political agreement with other parties. The issue is closely tied to the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional rights and political entitlements within the next federal government.

Under Article 72 of Iraq’s constitution, parliament has 30 days to elect a president after choosing its speaker and deputies. The president is then tasked with nominating the candidate of the largest parliamentary bloc to form the next government.

As one of Iraq’s most influential political forces, the KDP aims through this meeting to define its strategy for the next political phase and to secure the Kurdistan Region’s share of power amid ongoing political complexities and regional tensions.
