Iraq Investigates Khor Mor Gas Field Attack, Points to Tuz Khurmatu, Announces Security Overhaul

The Iraqi government has released the findings of its investigation into last week’s drone attack on the strategic Khor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region, pinpointing the launch location and announcing a major new security plan for the critical energy site.

In a statement issued Wednesday following the approval of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, an investigative committee confirmed the “cowardly attack” was carried out by two drones launched from areas east of Tuz Khurmatu district in Salahaddin province. One drone struck the field while a second fell outside its perimeter. Investigators have seized the remnants of both aircraft for forensic analysis.

The committee identified the launch site as the southern side of the field, specifically from areas east of Tuz Khurmatu, noting this marks the eleventh assault on Khor Mor originating from this same vicinity. Several suspects have been identified as "outlaws," with judicial arrest warrants already issued for some. Security forces are gathering additional evidence to secure convictions.

The Khor Mor field, operated to supply gas for power generation in the Kurdistan Region, is a vital energy asset for northern Iraq. The repeated attacks have raised significant concerns over electricity supplies, investor confidence, and the fragile security environment in areas disputed between federal and regional forces.

In response, the federal government, in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), unveiled a comprehensive package of protective measures. These include:

Redeployment and Command Changes: Security forces in the Salahaddin East Operations Sector will be redeployed to close security gaps. The Ministries of Defense and Interior, along with the Popular Mobilization Forces, have been instructed to replace current commanders in the area with “competent officers.”

Enhanced Intelligence Sharing: Strengthening intelligence coordination channels between federal and Kurdistan Region agencies.

Air Defense System: The Ministry of Defense, coordinating with the KRG, will provide an air defense system specifically for Khor Mor.

Drone Restrictions: Strict controls will be imposed on the use and transportation of all types of drones unless officially approved by authorities.

Judicial Follow-Up: The government will request the Supreme Judicial Council form a joint committee with security and intelligence agencies to pursue the investigation until all perpetrators are apprehended.

The government condemned the assault as a “dangerous terrorist act” targeting Iraq’s sovereignty and economic resources, aimed at undermining security and economic stability. It pledged to hold all those responsible fully accountable under the law.
