Iraqi Politicians Spend $1.4 Million on Meta Ads in Month Before Elections

In just 30 days, Iraqi election contestants have spent over $1.4 million on Meta platform ads. This spending surge occurred between September 24 and October 23, 2025, for the upcoming November legislative elections. The total expenditure across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp reached $1,424,963. Nearly a third of that amount was spent in the final campaign week alone.

The Iran-aligned al-Hoquq Movement was the top spender, investing more than $13,500. Other major advertisers included the Azm Front's Mahmoud Hussein and the Suqurna Alliance. At the provincial level, Baghdad recorded the highest spending at $342,573. In contrast, Halabja province in the Kurdistan Region saw the lowest, at just under $4,000.

Within the Kurdistan Region, KDP and PUK candidates were the biggest online spenders. KDP's Bnas Doski led regional spending with $5,803. Despite this, a tech expert stated that social media campaigning in Iraq remains relatively limited. He noted Facebook dominates due to its news-style interface. Meanwhile, Iraq's electoral commission has met with Meta to request spending data and distinguish fake accounts. This digital spending surge is largely unchecked, as Iraq lacks regulations governing online campaign ads.
