PKK to Announce Formal Dissolution in

he Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is poised to take what it describes as a “historic step” on Sunday, formally announcing its self-dissolution in a move aimed at ending decades of conflict with the Turkish state, according to media outlets affiliated with the organization.

The announcement, scheduled for a press conference on Sunday, October 26, is reported to be the culmination of a peace initiative driven by the group's imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan, and decisions made during the PKK's 12th Congress earlier this year.

This development marks a critical juncture in Turkey's long-stalled "solution process." It comes just days before a highly anticipated meeting between a PKK delegation and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 28. The delegation is also expected to visit Ocalan on Imrali Island ahead of a parliamentary commission session scheduled for October 30.

The process began in February when Ocalan, from his prison cell, urged the PKK to convene a congress to dissolve itself and end the armed struggle, labeling these actions as vital for peace.

Heeding that call, the PKK's 12th Congress, held from May 5 to 7, concluded with a landmark decision to cease all armed operations and formally disband the organization. The first symbolic act of this resolution occurred on July 11, when the group held a ceremony in the Jasana Cave area in northern Iraq. During the event, 30 PKK members, including senior leader Basi Hozat, publicly burned their weapons to mark the end of the armed struggle.

Sunday's expected announcement is anticipated to be the formal and final act of that dissolution process. If carried through, it would represent the most significant step in years toward resolving a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the PKK took up arms in 1984.
