President Barzani Urges Unity, Warns Against Division at Major Interfaith Gathering

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani delivered a powerful address on Saturday at a major interfaith gathering, championing Kurdistan’s deep-rooted culture of coexistence and issuing a firm warning against the dangers of division and discrimination.

Held under the theme “Kurdistan, the Land of Coexistence,” the event brought together religious scholars of Islam and representatives of other faith communities from across the region.

President Barzani warmly welcomed the attendees, emphasizing that the tradition of mutual respect among different faiths is an integral part of Kurdish heritage. “The culture of coexistence is an inheritance from our ancestors,” he stated. “We are all human beings and servants of God. Seeing all of you together is the most beautiful reflection of harmony and diversity in the world.”

He described this long-standing culture as a fundamental service to both Kurdistan and its history.

The Kurdish leader struck a cautionary tone, stressing that terrorism has never distinguished between religions and that maintaining unity is essential for the region's future. He pointed to history, noting that external powers have often sought to weaken the region by sowing internal division.

“We must not allow differences to divide us,” Barzani urged the audience. “Throughout history, various powers have sought to weaken this region by sowing division — but only through unity can we confront every threat and safeguard the interests and future of Kurdistan.”

He further warned that Kurdistan’s authentic cultural identity faces constant threats from those seeking to undermine its traditions and values, naming solidarity among the people as the strongest defense.

Speaking on domestic politics, President Barzani expressed hope that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) would be formed before the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, confirming that serious efforts are already underway to achieve that goal.

He also called upon religious scholars to play a more active role in society by promoting patriotism, social harmony, and youth awareness, particularly in combating destructive behaviors and narcotics.

“Religious scholars have a great responsibility in strengthening people’s sense of belonging and love for their homeland,” Barzani said. “Every step taken toward awareness, morality, and unity serves the same divine purpose.”

In his closing remarks, the President expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Kurdistan for their steadfastness and resilience. “I sincerely thank the people of Kurdistan for their patience and courage in the face of suffering,” he said. “Despite all challenges, we have participated in the elections for the sake of Kurdistan’s future.”
