SDF Fighters Wounded in Armed Attack North of Raqqa; Security Sweep Launched
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported that one of their military vehicles was targeted by an unidentified armed group on Friday, resulting in two fighters being wounded.
The attack occurred near the village of al-Mu’ayzilah, north of Raqqa, according to a statement released by the SDF on the social media platform X.
"The injured personnel are receiving medical treatment," the statement confirmed. In immediate response, SDF units initiated a security sweep in the surrounding area to locate and apprehend those responsible for the assault.
"Security operations are ongoing to pursue terrorist cells attempting to destabilize the region," the SDF said, vowing that such incidents would not hinder their operations. The force reiterated its commitment to "continue efforts to protect civilians and maintain stability across North and East Syria."
The attack underscores the persistent insecurity in the region, despite the territorial defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2019. The SDF, backed by the U.S.-led international coalition, has been the primary security force in northeastern Syria.
However, ISIS remnants continue to operate through sleeper cells, carrying out insurgent-style attacks. The province of Deir ez-Zur, a former ISIS stronghold, has been a particular hotspot for violence.
Just days earlier, on September 26, the SDF announced that five of its fighters were killed and another wounded while repelling an ISIS attack in the town of al-Bahra al-Wusta, east of Deir ez-Zur city.
