Barzani Discusses Upcoming Elections with Iraqi Delegation in Erbil
President Masoud Barzani met with a high-level Iraqi delegation on Thursday to discuss the political situation and the upcoming parliamentary elections, in a move underscoring efforts to build consensus ahead of the pivotal vote.
The meeting, held in Erbil’s Pirmam district, included Thabit al-Abbasi, Iraq’s Defense Minister, who led the delegation representing the Azem Alliance and the Nineveh For Its People (Ninawa Li Ahliha) coalitions.
According to a statement from the Barzani Headquarters, the talks focused on the current political climate in Iraq, with particular attention to the general elections scheduled for November 11. Both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation to ensure the electoral process is conducted fairly and transparently across all regions of the country.
The November election is viewed as a crucial test for Iraq’s political stability, which has been historically challenged by security concerns, disputes over representation, and tensions between the federal government in Baghdad and regional authorities. This dialogue between major Sunni-led coalitions and a key Kurdish leader highlights the ongoing attempts to foster inclusive participation and mitigate potential conflicts.
The Azem Alliance, a major Sunni political bloc, and the Nineveh For Its People coalition, which advocates for the interests of Nineveh province, are significant actors in Baghdad's political landscape. Their engagement with President Barzani points to a continuing effort to align regional priorities with national objectives and ensure a broad-based approach to the elections.
