Turkish FM Fidan: Stability in Syria is Essential for European Security
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Saturday that achieving stability in Syria is a critical prerequisite for security and peace in Europe. He called on the international community to support the government in Damascus in rebuilding its institutions and restoring essential services.
Speaking at a conference in Rome organized by the Institute of International Relations, Minister Fidan emphasized that a prosperous and stable Syria would have positive ripple effects far beyond its borders.
"The stability of Syria is essential for the security and peace of Europe," Fidan said. He urged global powers to assist in "rebuilding state institutions and providing essential services, including security and stability" to the war-torn country.
Fidan also strongly underlined the importance of preserving Syria's territorial unity and sovereignty, stating that regional prosperity would benefit both regional and global security.
A significant portion of the Foreign Minister's address was dedicated to criticizing Israel. Fidan accused the country of repeatedly attacking Syrian territory with the aim of destabilizing its neighbors.
“Israel seeks to weaken its neighbors and undermine their stability, and does not want to see economically or politically successful countries in its vicinity,” Fidan asserted. He went further, claiming that Israel’s “true goal is geographic expansion, not security.”
Turning to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Minister Fidan described the situation as a pivotal moment for the global community. He framed the international response as a measure of the world's commitment to justice.
Fidan argued that the first step toward a fairer international system is to unequivocally condemn Israel’s actions and expose the facts on the ground. His comments reflect Turkey's increasingly vocal stance against Israeli military operations and its advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
