Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers to Hold Key Meeting on Oil, Finances, and Peshmerga Law
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is set to convene today, Wednesday, for a session expected to address several critical issues, including the ongoing oil revenue dispute with Baghdad and the implementation of the Peshmerga retirement law.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, will focus heavily on the latest developments in the federal oil and revenue-sharing negotiations. The cabinet is scheduled to review the outcomes of the September 9 meeting of the Federal Iraqi Council of Ministers, seeking pathways to resolve the longstanding disputes that have halted oil exports from the Region.
In a significant move for public servants, the council will also examine a joint memorandum from the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs and other relevant parties, dated September 2, 2025. This memorandum contains crucial proposals for the full implementation of the Peshmerga Retirement Law No. (38) of 2007, a key commitment to veterans of the region's armed forces.
Further agenda items highlight the government's focus on economic relief. The Ministry of Finance and Economy will present its recommendations for alleviating debt and financial arrears for vital private sectors. This initiative targets specific industries including housing, agriculture, industry, resettlement, and tourism, aiming to stimulate economic growth and provide much-needed support to businesses.
Finally, in a continued effort to harmonize relations with the federal government, the Ministry of Finance will put forward several proposals to standardize financial procedures. This includes unifying tax guidelines and rates between the regional and federal tax authorities, a step seen as essential for strengthening fiscal stability and cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
