Xi, Modi Meet in Tianjin as SCO Summit Kicks Off
Chinese Premier Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, vowing closer ties between the two countries despite long-standing border disputes. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, being held in the Chinese city of Tianjin from Sunday through Monday.
This marks Modi’s first visit to China in seven years, a move seen as an effort to reset relations after years of military tensions along the Himalayan border. Both leaders expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in trade, connectivity, and regional security.
The SCO summit has brought together leaders from more than 20 nations, with regional security, economic cooperation, and energy partnerships topping the agenda.
Russian President Vladimir Putin received a red-carpet welcome upon arrival, highlighting Moscow’s deepening alignment with Beijing amid strained ties with the West.
In a separate meeting, China also upgraded its relations with Armenia, as Xi met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, pledging stronger political and economic cooperation.
