Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska for High-Stakes Ukraine Talks; Zelenskyy Excluded

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a closely watched summit at a military base in Alaska today, discussing a potential deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The meeting, which excluded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has raised concerns among Kyiv and its European allies over possible concessions that could force Ukraine to cede occupied territories.

President Trump expressed confidence after the talks, stating that Putin was "ready to make a deal" to end the conflict. "We had very productive discussions. I believe there’s a path to peace," Trump told reporters, though he provided no specifics.

However, Zelenskyy, who was not invited to the summit, has repeatedly questioned Putin’s willingness to negotiate in good faith. In a statement, Ukraine’s foreign ministry emphasized that any peace agreement must respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

European leaders, including German Chancellor and French President, voiced concerns that a U.S.-Russia agreement could undermine Ukraine’s position. "Peace cannot be achieved at the expense of Ukraine’s sovereignty," a senior EU diplomat said.

Reports suggest that Trump may be considering a deal that would involve Ukraine ceding some occupied territories in exchange for a ceasefire—a move Kyiv has previously rejected.

Despite Zelenskyy’s exclusion from the summit, Trump pledged to follow up with the Ukrainian leader. "I’ll be speaking with President Zelenskyy soon. We want a fair solution for everyone," Trump said.
