Kurdistan Region Boosts Water Security with New Dams and Barrages
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has made significant strides in ensuring long-term water security through the construction of new dams, barrages, and clean water projects across the region.
Under the current cabinet, eight new dams have been completed, with several more under construction. These dams have a combined storage capacity of over 250 million cubic meters of water, significantly enhancing the region’s ability to manage water resources.
In addition, 23 barrages have been built, with an additional 58 currently in development. These structures not only store water but also help replenish groundwater and support agricultural irrigation.
The KRG has also prioritized large-scale clean water projects to address shortages in urban areas. One of the most notable efforts is the Erbil Water Rescue Project, designed to provide sustainable drinking water to the capital and surrounding regions for decades to come.
Beyond water storage, the new infrastructure supports:
Hydropower generation
Agricultural expansion
Tourism development
Groundwater conservation
