President Barzani Commemorates Sinjar Genocide, Calls for Justice on 11th Anniversary

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and former President of the Kurdistan Region, marked the 11th anniversary of the Sinjar massacre with a statement honoring Yazidi victims and demanding accountability for the atrocities committed by ISIS.

In his message, Barzani described the 2014 ISIS assault on the Yazidi-majority region as a "crime surpassing all bounds of treachery and brutality," emphasizing that the Kurdish Yazidi community was targeted for both ethnic and religious reasons. He praised the Peshmerga forces for their role in liberating Sinjar, calling their campaign a "historic epic" that defeated ISIS and restored dignity to survivors.

Barzani also acknowledged the support of the U.S.-led coalition but stressed that justice remains incomplete. He urged the Iraqi federal government to compensate survivors and formally recognize the Yazidi genocide, while condemning "chauvinist policies" that he argued continue to marginalize Kurds.

The 2014 ISIS attack on Sinjar killed and enslaved thousands of Yazidis, with over 2,800 still missing.
