Halabja Set to Receive 24-Hour Electricity as KRG’s

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) "Runaki" project has reached Halabja, with teams working to provide the city center with uninterrupted electricity by the end of this year. The initiative will shut down nearly 60 private generators and transform the governorate’s power supply.

A technical team arrived in Halabja five days ago and is now upgrading electrical stations and transformers to meet the year-end deadline. Once completed, the project will ensure 24-hour electricity for the entire city center.

Residents have welcomed the move. "The Runaki project is vital for Halabja," Shad Hama Amin, a local resident, told Kurdistan24. "We fully support it, thank the ninth cabinet, and hope for its swift completion."

Kawan Karim, Halabja’s Director General of Electricity, confirmed that 25,600 subscribers in the city center will benefit from the project. He also highlighted its environmental advantages, stating, "Currently, 55 private generators operate in central Halabja. Once Runaki is implemented, all will be shut down, significantly reducing pollution and noise."

The KRG’s Runaki initiative aims to provide reliable electricity across the region, replacing erratic power supplies and costly private generators. Residents will receive a single monthly bill based on usage, while neighborhoods will see cleaner, quieter environments.

Runaki is part of a broader effort to extend 24-hour electricity to all of Kurdistan by the end of 2026. Official reports indicate that 2,000 generators have already been deactivated, with plans to shut down 5,000 more. The project is touted as both environmentally friendly and cost-effective for citizens, offering a long-term solution to the region’s electricity challenges.
