Kurdistan Region Intercepts Explosive Drones Targeting Peshmerga Bases

Kurdish security forces shot down two explosive-laden drones targeting Peshmerga military positions in Kirkuk and Sulaimaniya provinces late Thursday and early Friday, officials reported.

In a statement issued Friday, the Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate confirmed that the first drone was intercepted around 1:35 a.m. near Peshmerga forces stationed on the Parde front in Kirkuk. The second drone, also carrying explosives, was downed Thursday night near the Peshmerga’s 70th Unit base in Sulaimaniya. No casualties or material damage were reported in either incident.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which come amid heightened regional concerns over the increasing use of drones in targeted assaults.

The incidents follow escalating tensions between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Iraq’s federal authorities over accountability for such attacks. Last week, the KRG’s Interior Ministry reiterated calls for action after Baghdad dismissed allegations that Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) were involved in previous drone strikes.

The KRG criticized the lack of federal response despite multiple documented attacks in recent years, many with identifiable origins. The ministry highlighted the failure of joint investigative committees to hold perpetrators accountable.

“We expect federal authorities to take serious steps in revealing the facts, preventing future threats, and punishing those responsible,” the KRG Interior Ministry stated.
