Kurdistan Region PM Extends Eid al-Adha Greetings, Highlights Financial Challenges

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has extended warm Eid al-Adha greetings to Muslims in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and around the world, while also addressing the financial difficulties faced by the region.

In an official statement released by the KRG, Barzani expressed his hopes that the occasion would bring peace, comfort, and unity to all. Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic holidays, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God and coincides with the conclusion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

However, the Prime Minister noted that this year’s celebrations are overshadowed by economic challenges. “We celebrate this holiday with concern due to the difficult financial situation caused by the federal government’s collective punishment of the KRG,” Barzani stated. He assured citizens that the regional government is working diligently to overcome these hardships.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is marked by prayers, festive gatherings, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, with meat distributed to family, friends, and those in need. Alongside Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, it is one of the two major festivals in Islam.

Despite the festive spirit, the KRG’s financial struggles—stemming from ongoing disputes with Baghdad over budget allocations—remain a pressing issue. Barzani’s statement reflects both the resilience of the Kurdish people and the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.

As Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid, leaders across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have called for solidarity and compassion during these challenging times.
