Kurdistan Regional Government Announces Free Thalassemia Treatment and Medical Exams
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a significant move to support thalassemia patients, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Masrour Barzani, has issued a decision to provide free medical examinations and treatment for those suffering from the genetic blood disorder.
The new directive ensures that patients can now access necessary medical tests and available treatments in government-run laboratories and health centers without financial burden.
Bajar Nouri, Director of the Thalassemia Treatment Center, praised the initiative, stating that it will greatly alleviate the struggles faced by patients and their families. He also revealed that 100 thalassemia patients requiring bone marrow transplants will be sent abroad for specialized surgeries, further expanding critical care options.
Affected individuals have welcomed the decision, sharing their previous hardships in affording costly monthly treatments. "We, as thalassemia patients, used to spend large amounts of money every month just to manage our condition," one patient said. "Thanks to the Prime Minister’s decision, we can now receive treatment free of charge."
This policy marks a major step in improving healthcare accessibility for thalassemia patients in the Kurdistan Region, offering hope for better medical support and long-term care.
