US Reaffirms Support for Strong Kurdistan Region Following PM Barzani’s Washington Visit

The U.S. State Department reiterated its commitment to a strong and stable Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, calling it beneficial for both the United States and Iraq. The statement followed a series of high-level meetings between Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

During a press briefing, State Department officials highlighted discussions on expanding economic cooperation and safeguarding community rights. They emphasized Washington’s continued interest in deepening ties with the Kurdistan Region, citing recently signed contracts between U.S. firms and the KRG as steps toward shared economic and strategic goals.

Secretary Rubio welcomed the agreements, stating they would advance mutual interests while reinforcing broader U.S. objectives in Iraq. The State Department also urged enhanced collaboration between Erbil and Baghdad, particularly in developing the Kurdistan Region’s natural gas sector, which could play a pivotal role in Iraq’s energy independence.

The U.S. has long-standing economic and security ties with the KRG, with American companies investing billions in the region, especially in energy. PM Barzani’s visit aimed to bolster these partnerships and underscore the Kurdistan Region’s role in fostering regional stability.

During his trip, Barzani met with top U.S. officials, including Secretary Rubio, to discuss economic development, energy cooperation, and security coordination. The Biden administration has consistently described the Kurdistan Region as a key partner in Iraq’s political and economic future.

The reaffirmation of U.S. support comes amid ongoing efforts to strengthen Erbil-Washington relations while encouraging dialogue between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government.
