Masrour Barzani Commemorates 49th Anniversary of Gulan Revolution, Honors Kurdish Struggle for Freedom

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Masrour Barzani, Deputy President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), marked the 49th anniversary of the Gulan Revolution with a poignant tribute to the revolutionaries, commanders, and Peshmerga fighters who played a pivotal role in defending the Kurdish people’s rights and aspirations.

In a statement issued on the occasion, Barzani honored the sacrifices of those who participated in the historic uprising, describing the Gulan Revolution as a defining moment in the Kurdish national struggle.

“With deep respect and appreciation, we commemorate all the courageous fighters who participated in the Gulan Revolution and defended the people of Kurdistan with dignity and strong conviction,” Barzani stated.

Barzani emphasized that the Gulan Revolution, which began in May 1976, was a continuation of the Aylul (September) Revolution led by the late Kurdish leader Mustafa Barzani. He highlighted how the movement thwarted the plans of Kurdistan’s adversaries and reinvigorated the Kurdish quest for self-determination.

“Through sacrifice, persistence, and unrelenting resistance, the Gulan Revolution paved a new path forward for the people of Kurdistan,” he said.

The revolution emerged after the collapse of the Aylul Revolution and became a symbol of resilience, reviving hopes for Kurdish autonomy. It later laid the foundation for the 1991 uprising, which led to the establishment of the Kurdistan Region’s self-governing institutions.

Barzani stressed that unity among Kurdish political and social forces was a cornerstone of the Gulan Revolution’s success. He urged contemporary Kurdish leaders and factions to uphold this legacy of cooperation.

“In remembering the Gulan Revolution, we reaffirm our belief in joint efforts and solidarity across all Kurdistani parties and groups. That unity was a key factor behind the success of the 1991 uprising and the achievements we enjoy today,” he said.

The statement also paid homage to the late Mustafa Barzani, a towering figure in Kurdish history, and his son Idris Barzani, along with all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Kurdistan’s cause.

“We salute the pure souls of Barzani the Immortal, Idris Barzani, and all Kurdistan’s martyrs who remain eternal in our memory,” Barzani concluded.

The Gulan Revolution remains a seminal chapter in modern Kurdish history, embodying the enduring spirit of resistance, sacrifice, and the unyielding pursuit of freedom. As Kurdistan reflects on this milestone, Barzani’s message serves as both a tribute to the past and a call to uphold the values that shaped the region’s hard-won autonomy.
