Kurdistan Region Signs Multi-Billion Dollar Energy Deals with US Firms, Marking "New Phase" in Ties with Washington

Kurdistan Region Signs Multi-Billion Dollar Energy Deals with US Firms, Marking

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has signed two major energy contracts with US-based companies, signaling a strategic expansion of economic and energy cooperation between Erbil and Washington.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani described the agreements as the start of a "new phase" in bilateral relations, emphasizing their potential to boost energy output, create jobs, and strengthen the region’s economy.

The agreements include:

A contract with HKN Energy and ONEX Group’s Miran Energy venture.
A second deal with WesternZagros Resources.

Both projects aim to significantly increase oil and gas production in the Kurdistan Region, improving domestic energy supply and supporting economic growth.

Barzani: "Commitment to Peace and Progress Through Development"
Speaking at a signing ceremony in Washington, PM Barzani thanked the US firms for their long-standing partnership with the Kurdistan Region.

"These multibillion-dollar deals underscore Kurdistan’s commitment to peace and progress through economic development," he said. *"Our government has prioritized energy sector reforms, including providing 24-hour electricity to Kurdistan and potentially other parts of Iraq."*

He also highlighted the broader impact of the investments:
"The work of HKN Energy and WesternZagros has not only benefited Kurdistan but also Europe and their home countries. These deals will power millions and create jobs."

Barzani framed the agreements as part of a larger effort to deepen ties with the US, moving beyond their traditional security partnership.

"Our relationship with the United States spans decades—from fighting tyranny to combating terrorism. But our partnership must go beyond security," he said. "Economic development and energy investment will further strengthen our bonds."

The deals are expected to:

Boost gas and oil production in the Kurdistan Region.
Enhance energy infrastructure, supporting domestic and export markets.
Attract further foreign investment, reinforcing Kurdistan’s role as a key energy player in Iraq.

The agreements come amid ongoing discussions between Erbil and Baghdad over oil revenue sharing and export rights. The KRG has emphasized its commitment to economic stability and energy independence as part of its long-term development strategy.

With these contracts, the Kurdistan Region aims to solidify its position as a reliable energy partner for international investors while fostering stronger economic ties with the US.

"This is just the beginning," Barzani stated, signaling potential future collaborations in energy and beyond.
