UN Chief Calls for Syrian Government to Engage with Kurds, Highlights Refugee Crisis

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday urged Syria’s administration in Damascus to strengthen cooperation with the Kurdish community, emphasizing their integral role in the country’s future.

Speaking at a press conference in Baghdad during the Arab Summit, Guterres acknowledged Syria’s Kurdish population, stating, “There is a Kurdish majority in Syria, and they are part of the Syrian people.” He revealed that in past discussions with Syrian officials, he had stressed the importance of recognizing Kurds as equal citizens.

Guterres also drew attention to the plight of Syrian refugees, contrasting their current treatment with Syria’s past hospitality toward Iraqis. “There were two million Iraqi refugees in Syria, and they were welcomed. It is painful to see that Syrian refugees are not being treated in the same way today,” he said.

The UN chief further highlighted the need for inclusive governance in Syria, calling for all communities to participate in shaping the nation’s future. He suggested that lifting international sanctions on Syria could foster progress across various sectors and improve living conditions.

Guterres’ remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Damascus and Kurdish-led authorities in northeastern Syria, as well as persistent challenges in repatriating Syrian refugees. His comments underscore the UN’s push for political reconciliation and humanitarian relief in the war-torn country.
