Kurdistan Region Promotes Solar Energy with Central Bank-Backed Loans

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a bid to protect the environment and ensure 24-hour electricity, the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Electricity is encouraging citizens to install solar energy systems, offering financial support through loans facilitated by the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI).

The Ministry recently organized a workshop to educate citizens on accessing these loans and understanding the legal and procedural steps for setting up solar power systems. Officials detailed the regulations for solar installations and the loan application process, reaffirming the government’s commitment to expanding renewable energy use.

A significant demand for solar energy has emerged in the region, with Sulaymaniyah province alone receiving applications for solar systems capable of generating up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity.

To support this initiative, the Central Bank of Iraq is providing loans of up to 30 million Iraqi dinars (approx. $20,500) for solar projects, with a repayment period of seven years.

Authorities are urging residents to take advantage of the program, emphasizing its dual benefits: reducing environmental harm and alleviating pressure on the national power grid.

This move aligns with broader efforts to diversify energy sources in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, where electricity shortages remain a persistent challenge. By adopting solar power, households and businesses can achieve greater energy independence while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
