Erbil Municipality Plans Advanced Recycling Plant to Tackle Waste Management Issues
Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Erbil Municipality is moving forward with plans to establish a state-of-the-art waste recycling facility as part of efforts to improve waste management and reduce environmental pollution in the city.
Mayor Karzan Hadi revealed in a statement today that the municipality has already begun taking concrete steps toward the project, including a recent waste analysis initiative.
"We currently have a designated landfill in the Kani Qirzhala area, but our goal is to collaborate with relevant authorities to build a modern recycling plant," Hadi said. "We are now working on the practical implementation of this project."
Last week, the municipality sorted and analyzed six tons of waste to determine the composition of plastic and organic materials—a key step in developing an effective recycling strategy.
Hadi emphasized that poor waste management has led to persistent environmental problems, including foul odors, landfill fires, and climate pollution. "Over the past decade, we have faced these challenges, but we are now committed to resolving them permanently," he added.
The proposed recycling plant is expected to significantly enhance Erbil’s waste processing capabilities, aligning with broader efforts to promote sustainability and reduce the city’s ecological footprint. Further details on the project’s timeline and funding are anticipated in the coming months.
