Iraq's Electoral Commission Dissolves 3 Parties, Total Registered Parties Reach 310

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq has dissolved three political parties for violating the country’s Political Parties Law, officials announced. Meanwhile, the total number of officially registered parties with the Commission has risen to 310.

Dr. Hemen Tahsin, Director General of the Department of Political Parties and Organizations Affairs at IHEC, confirmed the dissolution, stating that the decision was made either at the request of the parties themselves or due to legal violations. The penalties included the confiscation of their assets and the closure of their headquarters.

Tahsin explained that the violations included failure to submit final financial reports, receiving foreign funding, or maintaining ties with external entities—actions strictly prohibited under Iraqi law.

As part of its oversight duties, IHEC has been conducting regular inspections of party offices in Baghdad and other provinces. The Commission is also reviewing the files of parties whose terms have expired, requiring them to hold official conferences to maintain eligibility for future elections.

The dissolution comes amid ongoing efforts to regulate Iraq’s political landscape, ensuring compliance with transparency and legal standards ahead of upcoming electoral processes. With 310 parties now officially registered, IHEC continues to monitor political organizations to prevent foreign interference and financial misconduct.
