US and Russia Hold Ceasefire Talks in Riyadh Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict

Representatives from the United States and Russia began talks in the Saudi capital on Monday to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, even as Moscow continued its drone strikes on Ukrainian cities.

Ceasefire Talks Begin

The negotiations, held in Riyadh, aim to establish a temporary halt in hostilities, with an initial focus on protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The White House has dispatched its special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to engage with Russian counterparts.

Ukrainian officials have expressed willingness to agree to a 30-day ceasefire but insist that civilian infrastructure must be included in any deal. Meanwhile, Russia claims it has already halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities following a reported order from President Vladimir Putin last week. However, Moscow continues to strike what it calls "military targets" using drones and glide bombs.

Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Prolonging War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the Kremlin of deliberately extending the conflict, despite international efforts to broker peace.

"Russia is the only one dragging this war out," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. "Since March 11, a proposal for an unconditional ceasefire has been on the table—yet Russia continues its attacks."

Kyiv had earlier agreed to a US-proposed 30-day truce, but Putin has demanded preconditions, including an end to Western military aid for Ukraine.

Black Sea Security on the Agenda

The Riyadh talks are also expected to address safe navigation in the Black Sea. Russia previously withdrew from a UN-backed grain deal brokered by Turkey, raising concerns over maritime security. Ukraine seeks guarantees, particularly after repeated Russian strikes on the strategic port of Odesa.

Deadly Drone Strikes Continue

Even as diplomats met, Russia launched another wave of drone attacks overnight. Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 57 out of 99 drones, while six others failed to reach their targets.

On Sunday, a Russian drone barrage killed seven people, including a five-year-old child, in Kyiv and other cities. Meanwhile, Russia claimed its air defenses intercepted 28 Ukrainian drones over border regions, including Kursk and Rostov.

What’s Next?

While both sides have signaled openness to a limited ceasefire, major disagreements remain. Ukraine insists on broader protections for civilians, while Russia seeks concessions on Western military support.

The outcome of the Riyadh talks could determine whether a temporary truce is possible—or if the war will continue to escalate.
