Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Stresses Need for Permanent Solutions with Baghdad
Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), issued a statement today marking the anniversary of the March 11 Agreement. In his statement, Barzani emphasized the importance of resolving long-standing disputes with the federal government in Baghdad through peaceful dialogue and adherence to the constitution.
Barzani highlighted the historic significance of the March 11, 1970 agreement, which was a pivotal moment in the Kurdish struggle for rights and recognition. He praised the September Revolution, led by the late Kurdish leader Mustafa Barzani, for laying the foundation for the Kurdistan Region's constitutional status.
"The people of Kurdistan remain committed to a peaceful approach and dialogue to achieve their legitimate rights," Barzani stated. "However, this does not mean we will relinquish our constitutional rights. We will defend them by all means and will not compromise or bargain over them."
The Prime Minister also called for a "fundamental and permanent solution" to all outstanding issues between the KRG and the federal government. He stressed that such a resolution must be based on full compliance with the Iraqi constitution and previously signed agreements, as well as respect for the Kurdistan Region's constitutional entity.
The statement comes amid ongoing tensions between Erbil and Baghdad over issues such as oil revenue sharing, budget allocations, and the status of disputed territories. Barzani's remarks underscore the KRG's commitment to resolving these disputes through legal and constitutional frameworks while safeguarding the region's autonomy.
The March 11 Agreement, signed in 1970, was a landmark deal between the Iraqi government and Kurdish leaders, recognizing Kurdish autonomy and cultural rights. However, its implementation was short-lived, leading to decades of conflict and negotiation. Barzani's statement reflects the KRG's continued efforts to secure a stable and mutually acceptable relationship with Baghdad.
As the Kurdistan Region commemorates this historic agreement, Barzani's call for dialogue and constitutional adherence signals a renewed push for lasting peace and cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
