Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has paid tribute to the martyrs of the February 1 tragedy, emphasizing their sacrifice as a lasting symbol of Kurdistan’s struggle against terrorism.

In a statement marking the 21st anniversary of the attack, President Barzani honored the victims and urged for unity among the people of Kurdistan.

“The martyrs of February 1 have become a symbol of the blood spilled in Kurdistan by terrorists who killed without discrimination,” Barzani said. “They targeted the lives of our leaders and citizens. We must turn the memory of this terrorist crime into an opportunity for self-reflection and a foundation for strengthening our brotherhood, unity, and shared destiny.”

He stressed that national unity remains the most effective way to honor the victims and safeguard Kurdistan’s future. “The best way to respect the souls of our martyrs and fight terrorism is through unity. Only together can we protect our achievements, rights, and aspirations.”

Remembering the February 1 Attack

The February 1, 2004, twin bombings targeted the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Erbil. More than 100 people were killed, including top government officials, and hundreds were injured.

Among those martyred were:
