PM Barzani Calls for Baghdad's Role in Preventing Violations against Kurdish Citizens in Disputed Areas
Barzani made the call during a meeting with Iraq's Justice Minister Salar Abdul-Sattar on Monday in Erbil, where they exchanged views on "strengthening collaboration between the judicial systems of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government of Iraq," the premier's office said in a statement.
"The Prime Minister called on the Federal Justice Ministry and Iraqi judicial institutions to play an important and constructive role in preventing and deterring illegal acts, abuses, and violations against Kurdish citizens and their properties in the disputed areas," the statement added.
The prime minister also stressed on the need to prohibit policies that support demographic changes in the areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.
The Kurdish leader, in the meantime, emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, including the compensation of victims and families of the Anfal campaign, as well as the recognition of the destruction of thousands of villages in Kurdistan by the former Iraqi regime, led by Saddam Hussein, the statement continued.
"In my meeting today with Iraqi Justice Minister Salar Abdulsatar, I urged the federal judicial authorities to prevent any efforts of demographic changes & property violations targeting Kurdish residents in the disputed territories," PM Barzani wrote on Twitter.
