KRG Supports Peaceful Demonstrations; Rejects Violence: PM Barzani
Barzani's statement came after protesters set fire to the representation offices of both ruling, as well as opposition parties, in Said Sadiq, Sulaimaniya province, on Monday evening.
The Kurdish premier noted that the KRG thanks the citizens for their patience and that organizing peaceful demonstrations is a right for them in the framework of the laws and regulations, while rejecting any violence to destroy public facilities or buildings of the political parties.
"We understand our citizens’ grievances and appreciate their patience. But while peaceful civil demonstrations are a legitimate right under the law, violence, burning and rioting will not solve our difficulties," Barzani said.
He further reminded that Erbil has spared no efforts to deal with the current economic challenges the region is struggling with, noting that the KRG is also in contact with the federal government to reach an agreement on the budget issue in order to ensure the salaries of the public servants.
"The current economic crisis has been forced on us by outside events and we are doing our utmost to overcome the financial challenges that have affected the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the world," he added. "We are continuing our negotiations with the federal government to reach a fair, long-term agreement which recognizes Kurdistan’s financial rights and dues under the constitution."
"The current challenging time is outside the will and desire of the Kurdistan Regional Government," PM Barzani said, asking the people not to follow the destructive efforts which intend to harm Kurdistan Region’s stability.
"There is a clear line between peaceful protests and riots, and those found damaging public or private property will be held accountable."
