Iraqi military dismisses reports of unconfirmed rocket attack near Baghdad airport
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The Iraqi military is rebuking several media outlets for reporting a Katyusha rocket landed near the Baghdad International Airport's terminal in the early hours of Monday without their confirmation.

“We deny this news completely, and the Baghdad Operations Command did not indicate any missile attacks until 12:50 am," the Security Media Cell tweeted, which did not issue any further confirmation or denial of an attack.

"We are calling on the media to be accurate and to take information exclusively from the security media cell," the cell added.

However, AFP maintains their report that a rocket "landed near Baghdad airport overnight but did not explode," citing an unnamed Iraqi security source.

The unconfirmed attack comes just a day after a rocket landed at a residential home in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, injuring a child, according to the Iraqi military. Nearly a dozen similar attacks on international targets in the Iraqi capital have taken place over the course of a month.

Sunday's rocket attack was the first of its kind since Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS) personnel raided the headquarters of the Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia in Baghdad province on June 26, detaining at least 14 fighters of the group who were accused of recent rocket attacks in Baghdad.

Hours after the release of their fighters three days later, Kataib Hezbollah vowed to keep up their 'resistance'.

The US has attributed past rocket attacks on sites of international importance to Iran-backed militias part of Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), including Kataib Hezbollah, who it says are looking to further inflame US-Iran tensions. The PMF is a predominantly Shiite militia network known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi.
